Martinique Overview |
Martinique's resort emphasis makes the island ideal for all-inclusive travel. The 1100-square-kilometre terrain is topped by a series of mountain peaks. The most imposing is the dormant Mont-Pelee volcano. Botanical gardens teeming with indigenous flora show why it was called 'Island of Flowers'.
Isolated villages like Grand Riviere and Tartane retain the customs emblematic of traditional Caribbean fishing villages. Tartane is the island's most laid-back destination, a wonderfully underdeveloped stretch that boasts some of Martinique's finest beaches. |

Martinique Essentials |
Presqu'Ile Caravelle - Despite boasting some of Martinique's top beaches, it has remained delightfully underdeveloped. Fields of sugarcane and bamboo crush up against the access road before opening up to dramatic ocean vistas and arriving at Tartane, where a beautiful beach is busy with fishing boats and pelicans angling for dinner.
Beyond St-Pierre - North of St-Pierre, the coastal road borders the Caribbean after passing the Tombeau des Caraïbes, the limestone cliff from which the last of the Carib chieftains committed suicide in 1658. The villages along this quiet northern stretch are among the island's oldest, and their harbours make a picturesque prelude to the Habitation Ceron.
Grand 'Riviere - This jewel of a fishing village huddled on the lowlands framed by Mont-Pelée's dramatic flanks. The drive from Basse-Pointe alone makes a visit worthwhile, the thirty-minute route is the island's most thrilling, with tight hairpin turns, overgrown hillsides and bridges suspended over gorges.
Les Salines - Pristine white sand that trims an azure bay framed by swaying palm trees, makes this Martinique's most popular beach. If you get bored of lying in the sun, the sand is backed by a natural salt pond and borders a desolate petrified forest.
Fort-de-France - Likened to a a miniature Paris, Fort-de-France is stunning to behold, with its panorama of colonial houses and multiple church steeples wrapping around the Baie des Flamands and ascending into the surrounding mountainside. |
